What is Ghostwriting?

 Ghostwriting is a service where:

  • You provide the topic and possibly some material
  • I write the manuscript to meet your specifications and reflect your voice
  • You submit the manuscript to a publisher or self-publish it yourself (this is not the “vanity publishing” of the past)
  • You put your name on the cover of the book
  • You retain all profits and rights to it

Who uses ghostwriters?

  • Professionals of all types who want to be seen as an expert in their field
  • Public speakers, trainers, and coaches who want to popularize their topics
  • “Subject experts” who want to write a “how to” or self-help book
  • Celebrities and politicians who want to brand their name
  • Ordinary people who want to preserve their stories for future generations
  • Marketers and publishers wanting books written on specific topics

The Process For Getting Your Story to Paper:

  • Contact me with your idea today.
  • We will discuss your book in person, on email, Skype, or over the phone depending on our locations and what works best for you.
  • You will provide me with as much detail as possible about how you want us to collaborate, what you want in the final manuscript, and how you want me to present your voice in the book.
  • We will discuss each other’s responsibilities, what material you will provide and what I will research, a tentative time schedule for the process, and how we will deal with delays.
  • If I need to interview you or others for the material we will discuss how much time that will take, and where and when we will hold those discussions.
  • If I decide to take the project I will then offer you a quote and payment terms, and a contract to review.
  • If necessary we will have another conversation to clarify any questions.
  • You can then decide to hire me, approach another ghostwriter for a second quote, or put your book off to write another time. Regardless of your choice, YOU HAVE NO RISK!

My Fees:

The quote for your manuscript will be a set fee for the project. It usually falls between twenty and fifty cents of our agreed on estimated word count. My fee is based on how much time I think the project will take. For example, if you already have a rough draft and want me to clean it up for submission, that would take less time than if I had to interview you, compile your notes, and research additional data. Some of the factors that will influence the cost for your book include:

  • The amount of research I have to do.
  • The background material you can provide.
  • The number and length of the interviews I have to do with you or others.
  • The amount and quality of the manuscript you may have already written.
  • Anything else that will affect the time it will take to complete your book.

About me:

I’m a ghostwriter because I love to write and I can finally do so without needing to see my name in print.

That took awhile.

But writing is what I do best and what I love the most, so just being able to make a living at it, even if for others, is enough for me.

Long ago as a Health Fitness Instructor working with older adults I also found my love for helping others, and I see ghostwriting as another way to do so.

Today I am a PhD whose work relates to using civil resistance against violent oppression. You know, think Gandhi’s liberation movement, Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement, and the recent pro-democracy movements in the Middle East known as the Arab Spring.

My undergrad degrees are in religious studies (as in comparative studies) and international studies, and my masters degree is in integral theory (á la, Ken Wilber’s AQAL model). I have published articles and book reviews in academic journals, and various articles on peace and spirituality in popular e-zines and print magazines.

My latest book is a political fiction novel that takes place in Granada, Nicaragua, The Boétie Legacy, and a World in Peril, available on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X3ZWT0S) in e-book or print. I’m also in the final stages of a nonfiction textbook titled, Introduction to Nonviolent Conflict: People Power, Civil Resistance, and Social Transformation, which will be published by December 1st.

I have decided not to use a traditional publisher and instead self-publish my own books. I use a professional editor and graphics designer for the cover, and then I do all the work to format and publish the manuscript myself. While I’m not an expert on self-publishing yet, I can offer advice and information on the process for your own book if that is how you choose to go.

A ghostwriter’s life and work experience can give you an idea of how well they may be able to relate to your story.

For example my background as a Health Fitness Instructor implementing medical conditioning programs would make me a good candidate for a nonfiction book on health, fitness, and nutrition, etcetera.

In my case, I was raised in an Air Force Pararescue family and lived most of my childhood overseas until twelve years old. I joined the US Coast Guard at seventeen, and was eventually stationed in Juneau, Alaska, in 1978. The next twenty-four years were then spent working, playing, and raising family across our northern frontier. I returned to the lower 48 in 2002 and spent the next twelve years in Eugene, Oregon, working toward my PhD. I then moved to Nicaragua in 2013 to write my first novel based on my dissertation, and eventually moved to Ecuador to finish the publishing process. I have one adult son and currently live in Cuenca, Ecuador.

Some of my experience before and after returning to college in my mid-forties includes:

  • Quartermaster Second Class, US Coast Guard
  • Part owner/operator of a motel and bar in rural Alaska
  • Assistant big game guide, Alaska
  • Journeyman high-voltage power lineman, vested, IBEW Local 1547, Fairbanks, Alaska
  • Owner/program director, Center for Strength and Aerobic Conditioning
  • Instructor: PE403: Concepts of Program Design and Physical Fitness Assessment, UA, Fairbanks
  • Network distributor and business trainer, medical nutritional products
  • Health Fitness Instructor/Personal Trainer specializing in older adult fitness
  • Nude model for art classes
  • Novelist
  • PhD – academic research and writing
  • Instructor: English as a Second Language, La Universidad Estatal Amazónica, Puyo, Ecuador
