What I offer:

I provide instruction in American English as a second language for people, scholars, academics, and professionals who have upper-intermediate to advanced level English language skills and who want to improve those abilities further. The emphasis is on improving how well you can read, write, speak, and understand spoken English, not on grammar.

In many cases these classes can be tailored to your specific needs and field of inquiry.

All you need is a quiet place, an Internet connection, and a desire and willingness to improve your American English language skills. A headset and microphone are recommended.

How the courses are structured:

Listening, reading, and speaking courses:

In the courses focused on listening, reading, and speaking skills you will be sent a list of possible new vocabulary related to that day’s lesson. You will be expected to know that vocabulary before class starts. This is very important because you want to spend your time with me working on your skills, not doing tasks you can do by yourself. We will start the class by reviewing that vocabulary and making sure you understand the meaning in context of the material we are using.

We will then work on your listening skills. The process will include me reading portions of the text while you complete exercises to determine your comprehension. You will hear me read the text several times, and the exercises will be designed to insure you are able to hear the subtle nuances that make listening comprehension so difficult to master. This is one reason why it is necessary to learn from a native English speaker if you want to move from an intermediate to advanced skill level.

By working with the text to develop your listening skills first, you will be familiar with the material before we begin the reading and speaking practice. This is important because it can be difficult to both practice your reading and speaking skills as you attempt to comprehend the material. During this portion of the class you will read to me as I correct your rhythm and pronunciation. We will work with each sentence and each paragraph as needed to ensure you are able to speak more smoothly and pronounce the words correctly.

The final section of the class will be a short discussion about the material based on a couple of questions designed to reinforce the work we have done. During this time you can let me know if the class was too easy or too difficult, or areas you feel we need to work on more.

 Writing classes:

Depending on the level and purpose of the class we will either work with text you have already written, or you will write a text before class based on an article you read. Our time online will be spent reading, editing, and rewriting your material together. By having real-time corrections by a native English writer you will improve your writing skills much faster and learn the finer points of writing American English that can take many years to learn.

Working one-on-one with an instructor can be a very intense learning experience for both people, and that is why the classes have been kept to under an hour. Students should come to class prepared to work the entire period. We will keep the atmosphere fun and relaxed, and I will provide you the greatest value possible for your time and money spent.

My Qualifications

I am a 57 year-old native American English speaker living in Cuenca, Ecuador. I have been a student of one sort or another all of my life, and I enjoy working with others who also have a passion for knowledge. Learning a new language is one of the hardest things we can attempt, and I know first hand the difficulties and frustrations involved from my own efforts studying Spanish for the last twelve years.

I received my doctorate (PhD) in 2014 (for my CV go to the Media and Permission page). Throughout my college career writing was one of my strongest assets. I have the skills to help you improve your writing at every academic level, and to ensure you receive the highest grades on your papers and that you have the best chance that your articles will be accepted for publication by academic journals.

I earned my Cambridge University Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) at the intensive residential program taught in Montañita, Ecuador. Afterwards, I taught intermediate English at Amazon State University in Puyo, Ecuador. I have the training and experience needed to help you make dramatic improvements to your English language skills.

Because of my own experience learning Spanish I understand the amount practice you need to become proficient at the four language skills—reading, writing, speaking, and listening. My courses are designed to give you the maximum amount of time practicing these skills during your time with me. When English is taught in a one-on-one setting with a native English speaker modeling correct pronunciation and correcting errors as you work your abilities will improve as quickly as possible.

Refund, Cancellation, And Late Start Policies

Refund policy: There are no refunds for classes once purchased.

Cancellation policy: I require at least 24-hours notice to reschedule a class. This is a strict policy and there will be no exceptions. Please do not ask. When rescheduling a class I will attempt to meet your needs as best as possible, but I will not reschedule classes outside of the times listed on this page. Depending on availability this may mean that we have to reschedule your class after the last one of the course.

Late start policy: I will wait 15 minutes past the start time of the class for you to connect with me. After 15 minutes the class will be cancelled and cannot be made up. If I am late to class but within 15 minutes of the start time, we can extend our session the amount of time I was late or add it to another session if either of our schedules will not allow making up the time that day. If I am more than 15 minutes late to class you have the option to reschedule the session during my normal working schedule.
